Whippets need daily exercise. These dogs are born to run and their athletic bodies should be maintained in excellent form. A safe off-leash area or a spacious yard to allow a Whippet to run at top speed is a requirement. If you cannot provide such an opportunity for the Whippet, this breed is probably not for you.
Whippet Dogs - General Care Requirements
Whippet Dogs are not great barkers. This fact is considered one of the advantages of these dogs. Whippets shed but their fur is so short that it is not normally a problem. The grooming needs can be confined to regular brushing. Keep their hair free of parasites and cut their nails regularly. The Whippet's coat is odorless and gives little trouble to the owner. However, their coat makes it difficult for them to adapt to living in a kennel or as an outside dogs. Their coats do not provide insulation to bear the cold. Whippets benefit if they are kept as family pets close to people.
Whippet Dogs - Activities
Whippets enjoy plenty of competitive sports and activities. Being outstanding running dogs, Whippets are top competitors in lure coursing and oval track racing. For participating in racing and coursing, the Whippet must not have any breed disqualifications. For instance, being oversized is a disqualification. However, to take part in this spectacular sport, your dog should be show quality. Whippets can be successful obedience dogs. In addition, Whippets are wonderful companion dogs and loyal friends.
