Whippets can be obtained from different sources, such as pet stores, puppy mills, rescues, hobby breeders, etc. The wisest decision and the best luck you may have is to buy a Whippet from a reputable breeder.
Responsible breeders guarantee that the pups are produced from healthy parents. With a responsible breeder, you are able to see a pedigree and all medical documents, which prove the dogs do not have any genetically inherited diseases. To buy a pup from a reputable breeder is not as easy as it may seem. You will have to thoroughly research a breeder's reputation. They will decide if the Whippet suits you and if you suit the Whippet. Mind, that you will have to pass the examination with flying colors. It is hard to say, what dog will make a better pet. However, besides some difference in size of male and female Whippets, there are certain differences in temperament. For example, Whippet males tend to be more loyal, while females are more strong-willed and perhaps more complex to deal with. Both males and females are equally devoted to their owners. If you plan to have a faithful family pet and do not intend to breed, spay/neuter your Whippet. As a rule, Whippets are quiet and gentle dogs in the house. In spite of their high energy level, they are able to spend a lazy day on the couch. Whippets are not very good guard dogs, as they are unsuspicious and rather friendly to strangers. It is next to impossible to determine whether a male or a female will make a better pet. If you are serious about your choice to buy Whippets, your breeder will help you make the right decision.
