This breed resembles the modern Italian Greyhound. It is mentioned as late as 1859 in Darwin's The Origin of Species. It is generally agreed that the breed as we know it today developed in Northern England during the mid to late 19th century.

These hounds are usually described as the perfect "all purpose dog." The origin of the breed is not clear and the breed is not listed in the Encyclopedia Brittanica, published in 1788. A greyhound is shown, and also a small whippet-like dog labeled a "Naked Turkish Hound." Some can buy dogs from rescues locally; other people may travel to a prestigious kennel to get the best.
